Finding My Identity in Christ: A New Year's Resolution

I’ve never really been one for New Year’s resolutions. They often seem short-lived, a burst of enthusiasm that fizzles out before the calendar flips to February. But as someone who is always seeking to grow spiritually, personally, and professionally, I’ve decided that this year will be different. This year, I’m making a resolution that truly matters: to know my worth and better understand who I am in Christ.
The backstory to this decision comes from a recent experience that left me reflective. There’s someone I’ve known for a long time—over 20 years. Our last conversation was in early 2024. After that, he simply stopped responding. I could see that he had seen my messages, but he chose not to reply. At first, I thought, Maybe he’s just busy, or, Did I say something wrong? My overthinking mind went into overdrive, spinning scenarios and wondering what I could have done differently.
This past Christmas, I reached out again, sending a simple “Merry Christmas” message. Once again, there was no response. It’s hurtful when people ghost you, especially someone you’ve cared about for so long. But as I thought back on our relationship, I had to face a hard truth: I was the one keeping it alive. I’d reach out with birthday wishes, holiday greetings, and check-ins, but the effort was never reciprocated.
In that moment of clarity, I realized something: I’ve been undervaluing myself. I’ve been pouring energy into relationships that don’t pour back into me. And as painful as that realization was, it also sparked something powerful within me—a desire to live more fully in the identity I have in Jesus.
Who Am I in Christ?
The Bible is filled with truths about our identity in Christ. When we feel undervalued or unloved, these scriptures remind us of who we are:
I Am Chosen: “You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light” (1 Peter 2:9, NIV).
Knowing that God has chosen me helps me see that my worth isn’t tied to whether someone texts me back. I am valued because He says I am.
I Am Loved: “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8, NIV).
God’s love for me is unconditional and unchanging. Even when others let me down, His love remains steadfast.
I Am Enough: “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10, NIV).
I don’t need to prove my worth through one-sided relationships. God created me with purpose and intention, and that is enough.
I Am Redeemed: “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace” (Ephesians 1:7, NIV).
My past mistakes, my overthinking, my feelings of inadequacy—all of it has been redeemed through Christ.
Living in My Identity
This year, my resolution is to live out these truths. I want to:
Value Myself More: I will invest my energy into relationships that are mutual and life-giving. I will set boundaries and let go of those that drain me.
Focus on God’s Opinion, Not Others’: Instead of seeking validation from people, I will root my confidence in what God says about me.
Embrace Growth: Whether it’s through prayer, studying scripture, or simply taking time for self-reflection, I’ll prioritize my spiritual and personal growth.
Build a Christ-Centered Community: I want to surround myself with people who share a desire to live out their faith and identity in Christ. By connecting with others who value their God-given worth.
A New Year, A New Perspective
If you’ve ever felt overlooked, undervalued, or unappreciated, I want to encourage you to join me in this journey. Let’s make this year the one where we fully embrace our identity in Christ. Let’s choose to see ourselves through His eyes—chosen, loved, enough, and redeemed.
So here’s to 2025: a year of living with purpose, setting boundaries, and walking confidently in the identity that Jesus has given us.
How about you...What’s your resolution this year?
xo,
Ramona Louise
