You Were Taught to Be Loyal—Now Lead Yourself with Christ

Trusting in God’s Plan, Not Just Human Effort

I grew up believing a simple formula: work hard, stay loyal, do what you’re told, and growth will follow. For many of us, this shaped our careers and lives. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t.

Over time, I discovered a quiet but painful truth: hard work and loyalty did not guarantee growth. Scripture reminds us:

“Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain."Psalm 127:1

Our efforts matter, but God’s purpose and timing truly guide our lives.

Honoring God with Our Gifts

My mother had a beautiful singing voice, but she chose stability over creativity. I followed a similar path, working corporate jobs to support my family, especially as a single mom.

I don’t regret caring for my responsibilities—Scripture calls us to provide for our families (1 Timothy 5:8). But I do regret not giving my God-given creativity more room to breathe. Many of us choose practicality over passion—not because we lack dreams, but because we’re trying to survive.

Today, I’m choosing differently. Even as an introvert, even when I feel unqualified, I’m stepping out in faith. I’m writing again, speaking, and using my voice—not because I have it all figured out, but because I believe God calls us to obedience, not perfection (Philippians 1:6).

From Waiting to Walking by Faith

McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski said, “No one will ever care more about your career than you do.” At first, that felt discouraging. But it’s empowering—our future isn’t dependent on being chosen by others, but on choosing to follow God’s call for ourselves.

Life’s demands—paying rent, feeding our families—can make it hard to focus on growth. That doesn’t make you lazy or unmotivated. It makes you human. Jesus Himself acknowledged our daily needs (Matthew 6:31-33), but He also called us to seek first the Kingdom of God.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” Colossians 3:23

Stewardship: You Run Your Life Under God’s Authority

Your employer runs their business, but you are responsible for stewarding your life before God. That includes your growth, direction, finances, balance, and fulfillment. No company can define what a meaningful life looks like for you—only God can.

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”Ephesians 2:10

You Don’t Need Permission to Grow

One of the biggest lies we believe is that we need permission to grow, change paths, learn something new, or start over. You don’t. You’re allowed to outgrow old versions of yourself, pursue new skills, and imagine a different future—even if no one around you understands yet.

“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?”Isaiah 43:19

Small Steps, Big Faith

You don’t need a perfect five-year plan. You only need one next step, one course, one book, one conversation, one brave decision.

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”Psalm 119:105

It’s Not Too Late—God’s Timing Is Perfect

If you’re over 50, you might think, “I don’t have time to start over,” or “It’s too late for me to pivot.” Let me gently say: later does not mean over. Different does not mean disqualified. Older does not mean obsolete. It means experienced, resilient, and seasoned.

Honestly, I myself am learning this. I felt like it was too late—too late to seemingly “start over.” But then I realized I’m not starting over; I’m simply starting from where I currently am, with all the life experience and knowledge I’ve gained over the years.

“They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green.”Psalm 92:14

Build on What God Has Given You

You don’t have to throw away everything you’ve done. Start by asking: What skills have I used for years? What problems do I naturally know how to solve? What do people already come to me for?

“To one who has, more will be given.”Matthew 13:12

Learn One Marketable Skill at a Time

You don’t need ten new certifications. Pick one skill that aligns with your strengths and build it slowly. Thirty minutes a day over six months compounds.

“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.”Zechariah 4:10

Build Income While You Build Clarity

Not everyone has the luxury to pause life to “figure it out.” And that’s okay. Look for work that pays the bills, uses your current skills, and leaves a little energy left over. Your dream doesn’t have to be your only income at first.

“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.”Luke 16:10

Leverage Your Story for God’s Glory

Your life experience is not a liability—it’s an asset. You’ve navigated loss, transitions, responsibility, and starting over. That depth becomes powerful in writing, coaching, ministry, and creating meaningful resources.

“They triumphed… by the word of their testimony.”Revelation 12:11

Redefine Success—God’s Way

Success in this season may look like stable income, peace of mind, flexible work, purposeful projects, or a better quality of life. Not everything has to be about titles or ladders. Sometimes success is alignment with God’s will.

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”Matthew 6:33

Give Yourself Permission to Be a Beginner

Being new does not mean you’re behind. It means you’re brave. Growth has no expiration date.

“Behold, I am making all things new.”Revelation 21:5

Choosing Yourself Is an Act of Faithful Leadership

Leadership isn’t only about managing people. Sometimes leadership looks like taking responsibility for your growth, investing in your education, setting boundaries, walking away from what no longer fits, and believing God placed more inside you for a reason.

“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”2 Timothy 1:7

You are not late. You are right on time for the version of you that’s emerging now. And that version still has purpose, impact, and possibility ahead.

Father God,

Thank You for reminding me that my life is in Your hands and my future is shaped by Your purpose, not my past or my age. Forgive me for the times I’ve believed it was too late, or that I missed my opportunity. Help me trust that You are still working, still guiding, and still calling me forward.

Teach me to steward my life well under Your authority — my time, my gifts, my finances, and my growth. Give me courage to take the next step You place before me, even when I feel unqualified or unsure. Strengthen my faith to believe that You are making all things new and that You still have good works prepared for me to walk in.

I choose to place my future in Your hands. Lead me, shape me, and help me walk in obedience to Your will.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Friend, what is God stirring in your heart today? Will you trust Him with your next step—even if it’s small, even if it’s scary, even if it’s new? Pray for courage, seek His wisdom, and take one step of faith. Your story isn’t over. In Christ, your best days are still ahead.
